Long-Term Testosterone Therapy Improves Sexual Function and Quality of Life – Boston University School of Medicine

A new study published in the Journal of Urology showed significant improvement in both sexual and urinary function in men with low testosterone who receive long-term testosterone replacement therapy. The study went even further, saying that these men also enjoyed considerable improvement in their overall quality of life.

As you may know, Testosterone plays a pivotal role in sexual performance, urinary function, metabolism and a number of other critical bodily functions. As men age, a decline in testosterone production can trigger a variety of symptoms which constitute a clinical condition known as testosterone deficiency, or hypogonadism. These symptoms can include low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, low energy, fatigue, depressed mood, decreased confidence and an increased risk of diabetes.

Researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine worked with a group of urologists to examine the effects of long-term testosterone replacement therapy on the sexual health and urinary function of men diagnosed with symptomatic testosterone deficiency. More than 650 men participated in the study. The subjects were men in their fifties and sixties suffering from testosterone deficiency.

According to Abdulmaged Traish, PhD, professor of urology at Boston University School of Medicine, it was thought that testosterone therapy in men may have led to a worsening of urinary tract symptoms associated with prostate size. However, he and his colleagues discovered that, despite some increase in prostate size, the group that received testosterone replacement therapy experienced fewer urinary symptoms such as a weak urine stream, frequent urination, incomplete bladder emptying and waking up at night to urinate. Along with these improvements, objective testing revealed that the men treated with supplemental testosterone also enjoyed increased scores in assessments of their erectile function, sexual health and general quality of life.

These findings are great news for men suffering with symptomatic testosterone deficiency. In various studies conducted over the past several years, participants who’ve had their testosterone restored to optimal levels have seen increases in lean muscle mass, significant reductions in weight and waist circumference, improvements in stamina and sexual function, increased energy, and improved memory and mental clarity.

Professor Traish emphasized the value of testosterone replacement therapy, saying, “It is well-tolerated with progressive and sustained improvement in urinary and sexual function and overall improvement in quality of life.” In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in Low T awareness. Still, it’s estimated that only about 5% of men suffering from low testosterone are receiving treatment for this debilitating condition.
